Why is curiosity more important than memorization?

Children need facts, vocabulary, and foundational knowledge, and hence, this is not an argument against memory.

Real life does not present every problem with a known answer. While memorized knowledge helps children respond when patterns are stable, curiosity helps them recognise what kind of situation they are facing, ask better questions, and adapt when situations are uncertain.

Children need facts, vocabulary, and foundational knowledge, and hence, this is not an argument against memory. The limitation arises when remembering information becomes the purpose of education rather than one resource for thinking.

Does curiosity improve memory?

Research suggests curiosity actually strengthens remembering. A neuroscience study published in Neuron found that people in states of high curiosity remembered answers better immediately and after 24 hours. They also remembered unrelated information encountered while curious. Gruber, Gelman and Ranganath, 2014

Other research has connected curiosity with reward-related brain activity and a greater willingness to invest time in discovering an answer. Kang et al., 2009

A meta-analytic study described intellectual curiosity as a “third pillar” of academic performance alongside intelligence and effort. Curiosity is therefore not the opposite of academic achievement. It can be one of its drivers. Von Stumm, Hell and Chamorro-Premuzic, 2011

What does the real world need children to learn today?

The Cynefin framework, developed for sense-making and decision-making in various types of real-life situations, shows why relying mainly on memorized answers is inadequate. Different situations require different responses:

Much of schooling behaves as though every problem belongs to the clear domain: learn the method, recognise the pattern, and reproduce the expected answer.

However, climate change, social relationships, emerging technology, entrepreneurship, and community challenges are often complicated or complex. Applying a memorized solution to a complex situation can create false confidence rather than understanding.

How can schools prepare children for these realities?

Children must develop modes of responding to different kinds of problems and go beyond right answers. They need to recognise when to recall, analyse, experiment, or act.

Children discover that not knowing is not a weakness. It is information about the kind of situation they are in.

Memory gives children patterns from the past. Curiosity helps them make sense of the present and respond intelligently to futures that will not arrive with an answer key.
